The tuber represented by Bŭ-cēi could interestingly respond to the widely used plant metaphors in contemporary art discourse, such as that of rhizome. Bŭ-cēi stresses the "everydayness" of its edible feature and the storage function of the botanical "tuber" might better reflect the communal habits and cultural resilience of Wenzhou people in their migratory-settlement pattern.
The speculative design proposal exemplifies the feasibility of updating the city wall’s cultural meaning to be a creative asset. More than a petrified remnant, Nanjing City Wall could contribute to the contemporary discussion of imminent environmental challenges. If the coronation of a cultural heritage recognizes its historical value for today, speculative design would be today’s effort to annotate the cultural narrative for tomorrow.
As an artist, I have long been interested in how “human” acts as the measurer of time and space within landscapes. Yet it never occurred to me that, in the story of this mountaineering tragedy, human bodies would become such a startling measure for estimating the impacts of climate change.
The ecological metaphor observed in tree burials possesses deep philosophical thinking, and its universal appeal is able to shift the ethical views in traditional Chinese culture. For this purpose, the renewal of a ceremony that has been long passed down in rural areas could help with the localization of tree burial culture in China, further establishing a long-term mechanism that connects the festival life of urban and rural residents at watershed scale.
Unfortunately, most countryside that we see today is becoming gradually banal in a rather homogeneous pattern. As what this project wishes to uncover, a rural site could have been a milieu of exciting spectacles and remains as a palimpsest until today for designers to retrieve inspirations in depth.
