The reverence for the lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) among the Chinese dates back to ancient times. In traditional medicine, the lotus’s dietary and therapeutic virtues have long been esteemed, while its growth habit—emerging unstained from muddy waters—has been elevated into a refined aesthetic ideal among literati. Recent archaeological discoveries have enriched the conceptual understanding of the lotus imagery, allowing us to appreciate it from a deeper botanical history and a more microscopic perspective of  Cellular Biology.

The  diagram  triptych re-assembles the culturally rich native plant. By tracing the distribution and circulation of an "ancient lotus seed," different observational scales are opened and closed within the work. A series of diagrams, guided by research activities—including field sampling, specimen preparation, gene sequencing, and microscopic observation—adopt a drifting perspective to reveal the lotus in measured states across macro, meso, and micro scales. Ultimately, lotus is re-situated in a knowledge production system across multiple observational states.
