Within the view of schist cliff, woods and lawn, the Glendinning Rock Garden seems to be a typical copy of other picturesque gardens. This very site, however, actually holds a rich history underneath. The proposal attempts to reveal the lost scene of the place and reassembles a “deeper picturesque” in terms of both stratum and history.
Mica schist, the iconic bedrock underlying the city of Philadelphia, is revealed in a sunken garden here, where visitors are enveloped by this common yet unfamiliar geologic material. Nearby, the extinguished water work is recognized again for its industrial monumentality.
These scenes are presented in a picturesque garden, which makes the proposed landscape something sutured back to its historical period. Thus, the ghosts of history and the present reappear.
